“Daddy!”

Doug starts awake with a grunt. He lies still, listening. He hears just the seep of the toilet. The thump and gurgle of the icemaker downstairs. He has nearly dropped off again when Jenny screams.

“Daddy!!”

Doug is running. Before he has flung back the spread, before he has rolled entirely out of bed, he is running. His legs churn in a panic. He bounces off the bureau. He barks against the doorjamb.

“Daddy!!”

Doug races blindly along the hallway. “I’m coming!”

He reaches Jenny’s door. He feels about unsuccessfully for the light switch. He hears her. Whimpering. Doug sees in the darkened room, on Jenny’s windowsill, the dim luminescence of the lizard’s yellow eyes.

“He’s in here!” she says. It is a low, quivering whisper.

“I see him. Stay put.”

Doug finds the light switch and flips on the overhead globe. He eases across the room, his thumb and forefinger extended.

It allows him to pluck it from the sill. To carry it at arm’s length down the darkened stairway and into the den. It remains placidly on the jar bottom while Doug searches for the lid. He scours the desktop. Examines the chair seat. He locates the thing against the baseboard halfway across the floor.

Doug threads the lid onto the jar rim and screws it down tight. He fetches a roll of packing tape from his desk drawer and runs a length of it about the rim.

“All right, smart guy,” Doug says, peering into the jar, “now knock it off.”

He sets the jar in his open satchel and heads back upstairs to find Jenny asleep again already, sprawled on her back. Doug switches off her light and stumbles down the hallway. He drops onto the mattress, drawing up the covers. He settles and moans. He dozes. He dreams.
